Swedish Auto Review

Some of the plot elements don't quite click with full realism, a few plot elements are rather tired, but this is the exception. The other aspects of the film, deeply introversive, are very unique and well-presented. There are spans in this film in which there is hardly any dialogue and the presentation of the action of the actors in their situation is engrossing. Lukas Haas is as if I had never seen him before. It feels like two different movies -- the kind you expect and can predict, and probably don't want to see again, and another kind, something disturbing and real and trying to break out of the safety of the ordinary genres.

Lukas Haas (BRICK) and January Jones (MAD MEN) star in this acclaimed drama about isolation, obsession and the quiet possibilities of love. Carter (Haas) is a shy auto mechanic locked into his daily routine. Darla (Jones) is an attractive waitress at the local diner who hides a deep personal wound. In a place where secrets live in the shadows, can two mismatched loners reach out to each other and confront the only truths that matter? Chris Williams (CALIFORNICATION) and Brianne Davis (PROM NIGHT) co-star in the indie sleeper written and directed by Derek Sieg that L.A. Splash calls Unique, honest and enthralling...a sweet ride that defies Hollywood convention and seems as second nature as reality.

Mad Girl - Judith Johnson - Albany, NY
A far as I can tell this indie film was made the year before Mad Men premiered and is worth watching for January Jones' performance as Darla alone. It is a tribute to her acting ability that here she realistically portrays an older teen from the wrong side of the tracks and a year later she is the trophy wife of ad exec and mother of two.

Child star Lukas Haas Witness gives an excellent portrayal of Carter, a shy, introverted mechanical who is a bit of a stalker! It is shot on location in Virginia and has a good supporting cast.

My criticisms are: the numerous subplots remove the focus from the main protagonists and Darla's home life is way too wretched for someone to remain there a day longer than necessary. Too bad it could have been a wonderful Independent movie ala Manny & Lo or Haas' other recent indie movie, Brick)!
