Foreign Bodies

Foreign Bodies Review

See more picture

"Foreign Bodies" opens with a police raid of an Asian brothel. The scene then cuts to a police station, where a detective questions one of the prostitutes, Chanida (nicknamed "Joy"), played by the leading actress Shirley Blanco. The officer's objective is to obtain information that would lead to an indictment of the ringleaders. At first Chanida is reluctant to even say a word, but gradually she opens up to the detective, whose goodwill and gentle persistence help allay her fears. From here the movie unfolds as a series of flashback sequences, as Chanida recounts her ordeal as a sex slave sent to Canada from her native Philippines.

Based on actual events, the movie calls attention to the harsh lives led by poor, underprivileged Asian girls forced into prostitution by greedy, ruthless men, who often threaten to kill their families if they dare decide to flee. Chanida arrives in Canada as a naive young virgin, but things quickly change for her once she is whisked off to the brothel. Her first client, a corpulent middle-aged gambler, eagerly pays one thousand Canadian dollars for the thrill of deflowering her. But this is only the beginning for Chanida, as one john after another visits the whorehouse to have sex with her, often preferring her to the more experienced prostitutes.

Fortunately the movie is interspersed with humorous scenes. One such moment occurs when Chrissie, Chanida's closest friend at the brothel, attempts to define certain sexual terms for Chanida. The results are hilarious. The girls joke about the johns and even poke fun at each other. In addition to providing comic relief, these instances demonstrate that the girls try to cope with their plight as lightheartedly as they can in an effort to keep their spirits up. There is a fair amount of nudity and sex here, and some violence as well--all fully warranted, given the context.

Blanco's acting is commendable. Chanida's broken English, however, is an unconvincing attempt to mimic the English spoken by an unschooled Filipino girl (English is one of the official languages of the Philippines, used largely in education, government, and commerce). Nevertheless, if one can forgive such a flaw, it won't be difficult to appreciate the movie's praiseworthy effort to portray the horrors of coerced prostitution, a deplorable but common situation affecting many young women and girls in countries the world over.

The full-frame picture is decent, although by today's standards it falls somewhat short. Colors are slightly muted, and the images, though clear, are a little soft. The Dolby stereo sound is unremarkable.

Two Criminal 'Pimps.' Not Just One - Artist & Author - Near Mt. Baker, WA
One leaves viewing this movie feeling that the Canadian authorities are nearly as criminal as the thugs that run the brothel where the young girls are being forced into prostitution. After spending the whole movie with a detective drawing out Chanida's story to be able to prosecute the men involved, she is sent back to her home country. Not to a better life, but to face the part of the gang in her home country that sold her into prostitution, only this time in much worse conditions than in Canada. In short, both the pimps and the police were interested in Chanida only to serve their own purposes, not hers. But then, maybe that is the whole point of the movie.

The single aspect of the movie that didn't ring quite true to me was to have a male detective interviewing her. I think it would virtually always have been a woman officer who would deal with a teen girl involved in commercial, criminal sex. (Maybe if they had a woman talking to her, she would have tried to find a way to protect Chandia.) There is quite a bit of nudity of fifteen-year-old Chandia (she is called 'Joy' by the people in the brothel), full, sexually related nudity. It doesn't come close to being pornographic, but it is realistically depicted prostitute nakedness. The language isn't as bad as what one might expect from such people.

This isn't a great movie, but it certainly is worth watching, especially if one likes movies about the dregs of society. Or, if one wants to see a movie about a teen who has no hope of improving her situation (thanks to the insensitivity of some immigration laws). It is important to also remember that this movie is based on an actual case of one living, Filipino teen.

Swedish Auto Review

Some of the plot elements don't quite click with full realism, a few plot elements are rather tired, but this is the exception. The other aspects of the film, deeply introversive, are very unique and well-presented. There are spans in this film in which there is hardly any dialogue and the presentation of the action of the actors in their situation is engrossing. Lukas Haas is as if I had never seen him before. It feels like two different movies -- the kind you expect and can predict, and probably don't want to see again, and another kind, something disturbing and real and trying to break out of the safety of the ordinary genres.

Lukas Haas (BRICK) and January Jones (MAD MEN) star in this acclaimed drama about isolation, obsession and the quiet possibilities of love. Carter (Haas) is a shy auto mechanic locked into his daily routine. Darla (Jones) is an attractive waitress at the local diner who hides a deep personal wound. In a place where secrets live in the shadows, can two mismatched loners reach out to each other and confront the only truths that matter? Chris Williams (CALIFORNICATION) and Brianne Davis (PROM NIGHT) co-star in the indie sleeper written and directed by Derek Sieg that L.A. Splash calls Unique, honest and enthralling...a sweet ride that defies Hollywood convention and seems as second nature as reality.

Mad Girl - Judith Johnson - Albany, NY
A far as I can tell this indie film was made the year before Mad Men premiered and is worth watching for January Jones' performance as Darla alone. It is a tribute to her acting ability that here she realistically portrays an older teen from the wrong side of the tracks and a year later she is the trophy wife of ad exec and mother of two.

Child star Lukas Haas Witness gives an excellent portrayal of Carter, a shy, introverted mechanical who is a bit of a stalker! It is shot on location in Virginia and has a good supporting cast.

My criticisms are: the numerous subplots remove the focus from the main protagonists and Darla's home life is way too wretched for someone to remain there a day longer than necessary. Too bad it could have been a wonderful Independent movie ala Manny & Lo or Haas' other recent indie movie, Brick)!

I bought this for my mom's birthday because this is one of her favorite shows of all time.

Outside: Beautiful cover art, great discs and DVD cases, includes Spanish track (which is a must for us because my mom knows very little English)

Inside: Even though my mom is not a very religious person, she tells me that every time she watches Touched by an Angel she feels an internal peace that no other show gives her.

She loves the DVDs and I'm very pleased with this product because she's happy :) This Giftset includes both volumes 1 & 2 of Season 3.

Frontier Women (Buffalo Girls / True Women) Review

Both films feature top female performers in some difficult roles and situations. All performances were excellent. They honored the women of fiction and fact from the past with grace, dignity and humor while staying as true as possible to historical understanding. Buffalo Girls: Based on Larry McMurtry's best-selling novel, Buffalo Girls celebrates the bold escapades of tough-talking Calamity Jane and her illustrious cohorts. True Women: Spanning five decades from the Texas Revolution through the Civil War, Reconstruction and beyond, True Women tells the story of the friendship, survival and triumphs of three friends.

The Cellar Door

The Cellar Door Review

A low-budget serial killer flick that focus's on the relationship between captor & captured instead of torture.
Almost the entire movie takes place in Captain Psycho's basement,
so there isn't much in the way of scenery, just a cage.
But it's a nice cage.
He "got an A in shop class".
A cage where he keeps women.
Well one woman at a time, till they die, or try to escape.
And during their luxurious stay he collectss pieces of them.
(You don't want to know what that means, but it's not what you think)
The movie starts off as he loses his last venture,
and continues as he finds, stalks, and captures a new obsession (all of this is in the first 5 -10 minutes)
The rest of the movie plays out like a less outlandish, infinitely better version of Captivity,
No bizarre torture scenes, no high tech surveillance equipment, or twist endings you could see a mile off shore.
Just a psycho, an altar, a beautiful woman, and a cage.
Not a terrible amount of gore.
There's enough though to keep a gorehound's appetite sated, but not enough to be considered overly gory.
Like another reviewer here stated; the creator of this flick is someone who deserves a bigger budget to work with.
There is a very minimalist approach to this story, but it's one that works.
This movie makes a loaf out of a slice of bread.
In both the positive (budget) and negative (plot) sense.
At the very least it's worth a rental.
A purchase if you like torture flicks.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
If you love something.... lock it your basement.
If it stays it'll love you forever,
If it dies it was never meant to be.

She's In a Crate, and He's Annoying Her Badly - Zephyr - unemployment line
And that's about the extent of it. It was not pulse-pounding, riveting, or terrifying in any way, except that I was stuck watching another low-budget mess that could have been presented better if only some talent and creativity were involved in the process. The characters and dialogue were unbelievable, and my heaving sighs of great discontent failed to move the film along any faster. The psychological aspects of the characters' encounters bored me, and I felt myself drawn to meaningless minutiae to stay awake.

"You know," I say to the Significant Other, "She can't lay down in that tall crate, and that's the sort of thing they do to torture POW's in camps. He does care for her, and she would be in agony by now." Really. I read about these sorts of things. "And how come her makeup is still fresh? I look like a sewer rat if I haven't showered in two days, and she looks great. I wonder if it's the shampoo I'm using? Look at those jars, now that's kind of cool. You know, he'd be feeding her pizza and take-out; men like that really aren't into cooking."

Finally the movie crawls to a predictable end - "Oh, look what happened! Now, what are the odds of that? Hmmmm?" I am now trapped in a crate of my own, unable to justify the time and energy spent watching this movie. Sighhhhhh....
