Invasion of the Alien Nurses, film at 11 (after the kiddies are in bed)... - Robert P. Beveridge - Cleveland, OH
Candy Stripers (Kate Robbins, 2006)

Really, you don't check out a movie with a title like Candy Stripers expecting horror. Cheesecake, yeah. Lots of high-school girls half-out of uniforms? Awesome! I expect that the movie's low rating on IMDB-- 2.1, as I write this-- has to do with the movie's almost complete lack of cheesecake more than it does with its thoroughly complete lack of horror. It's a Sci-Fi Channel Original Movie, but without any of the edited-out bits edited out.

The plot: after a particularly nasty high school basketball game, three guys from the visiting team find themselves in a hospital far from home. Team captain Matt (Doll Graveyard's Brian Lloyd) is the all-around nice guy who seems a little bit smarter than those around him. Tammy (Portal's Sarah McGuire, premaritally Sarah Ball), the team manager, has a crush on him, but he's too busy dating the head cheerleader (Boo's Nicole Rayburn), appropriately named Krystal, to have noticed. Tammy's brother Joey (William Edwards, Jr., in his first screen appearance) is in the next bed over, while power-hungry Brian (Kevin Thomas Fee) is just down the hall. No one's complaining all that much, since the hospital seems to be stocked with peternaturally beautiful candy stripers. But they all have this weird sweet tooth. And they all seem to be nymphomaniacs. Oh, yes, we're all set up for cheesecake city. Well, except for the whole alien-invasion scene at the beginning of the movie...

I know it's a minor thing, but I have to get it off my chest. Why is it that low-budget horror movies have this thing for taking the cast's most beautiful girl and putting her in the "homely sister" role? It happens all the time, but it's more noticeable here than usual; we've got a cast that's jammed full of beautiful women (including two Playboy playmates) running around throwing themselves at everything that moves, and then you get this jaw-dropping beauty who's supposed to be the mousy member of the family. Hey, guys? It doesn't work. It never has. It never will. More germane to why this movie is as bad as it is is, well, everything else about it. The script plays out like this was actually supposed to be a cheesecake comedy, not a horror film. (Jill Garson and writer/director Kate Robbins are both first-time screenwriters, and it shows.) The acting ranges from the competent to the horrendous. Surprisingly, the playmates are both on the competent side of the equation. The characters are barely shallow enough to be called paper thin, with stereotypes running hard and fast. (You've met Krystal in at least three dozen teen comedies in the past twenty years.) The plot is predictable when it's not being stupid. And every once in a while those two components join forces for an all-out assault on both the senses and the sensibilities of even the least discerning viewers.

And yet despite all this it's stupidly watchable, in that Sci Fi Channel Original Movie way. (Expect to see this one hit Sci Fi relatively soon, though if you have a thing for breasts, you'll want to rent the DVD.) It's fun if you're not expecting anything even remotely akin to good filmmaking. Unlike most of IMDB's raters, I'm giving this one nipple up for the cheesecake factor, the barely competent acting, and the stupid, mostly unintentional humor. And because I would be willing to watch Sarah McGuire read the phone book for two hours. ** ½

The Lisbon Story

The Lisbon Story Review

See more picture

When I think about Lisbon the images of Alfama, the electric tram, the Tagus river, its food, its people, and Fernando Pessoa come to my mind, but I have never considered that Lisbon could be experienced through its sounds, and I'm not talking about the sound of fado, that's a theme for another Lisbon Story. Wim Wenders pays special attention to the importance of sound, and music, when making a film. He shoot this film in the true Lisbon, in the heart of the city, not the Lisbon that you see in postcards, and he has managed to capture my beloved Lisbon as it really is, beautiful, old, dilapidated, surrealist, full of character.

I love the music of Madredeus, although is not traditional fado, and despite the fact that I'm not a Teresa Salgueiro's fan, I have to say that the music -Salgueiro's high-pitched voice, and presence, included- gives an ethereal atmosphere to the film. No one but Madredeus could have been more adequate to make the music of Lisbon Story.

I'd have loved to give 10 stars to this film. I loved it, it's magic, pure visual poetry. A fantastic trip to an amazing place that it will stay with me for a long, long time.

"In broad daylight, even the sounds shine" Fernando Pessoa A GERMAN FILMMAKER SUMMONS HIS SOUND RECORDER FRIEND TO JOINHIM IN LISBON. WHEN THE LATTER ARRIVES, HIS FRIEND HASDISAPPEARED, LEAVING A FEW CANS OF SILENT FOOTAGE. THE SOUNDMAN WANDERS AIMLESSLY THROUGH THE STREETS OF LISBON RECORDING SOUNDS OF THE OLD CITY TO MATCH THE IMAGES LEFT BY HIS FRIEND.

The Lisbon story - J. Andrews - Salt Lake City
If you are interested in the process of filmmaking (before digital) this charming film follows a sound man gathering material for his friend's film. Since it takes place in the beautiful city of Lisbon there is a lot of charm to be seen and heard. We also meet the neighbors of the now missing filmmaker, the music group Madredeus, and their music compliments the journey of the sound man looking for his friend and collecting sound for his film. Explores some philosophical issues about filmmaking and also how some "foley" sound is made for films.

Vacation Paradise without travel - Anita Diggle - NYC
Lisbon is truly an unique experience and it's fado music is an unexpected delight. This will take you on a minivacation.

Spiker

Spiker Review

See more picture

SPIKER is one of the better "slasher" flicks I've seen in a long time! For years now, films come out with the press following it saying how it's a throwback to "80's old-school horror" but I have yet to see one that captured that feel until SPIKER. A good mix of horror, gore, t&a, camp, and a few good scares and laughs.
It also is a great hybrid of a slasher flim with a very cool ghost story.
I had a great time with it and if your into horror....you will too. Studio: Mti Productions Release Date: 12/16/2008 Run time: 90 minutes

A cure for insomnia. - Robert P. Beveridge - Cleveland, OH
Spiker (Frank Zagarino, 2007)

Zagarino (Fist Fighter 2)'s yawnfest involves an entirely un-scary serial killer (played by Zagarino himself) menacing a group of young-and-beautifuls in a scary old house. Okay, so we've never seen this one before. As usual, the only things that make it worth watching are three very brief pieces of entirely gratuitous nudity, one involving each of the three female Y-n-Bs. All of them are quite attractive, so if that's enough to get you watching, by all means, have fun. Unfortunately, though, you have to suffer through the rest of the movie, which is just as predictable and silly as you're expecting given what I've written so far. Worst movie I saw this week... I think. (half)

two points about the movie - grew up in the 1960s - usa
first, i think the spiker's anger is misplaced. it doesn't say much for the spiker that a flea ridden dirtbag like the yokel in the movie could steal the spikers girl, impregnate her and then marry her. the spiker has got to look in the mirror and stop blaming others. second, the spiker missed his calling in life. given the spiker's incredible ability to throw railroad spikes for distance and accuracy i believe he could have been a great NFL quarterback. the spiker also exhibits a tremendous ability to absorb punishment, a prerequisite for a successful NFL career. if he would have taken this path in life instead of becoming a serial killer he would have had cheerleaders and hollywood starlets to console him. he could have more easily gotten over his first love and saved everyone a lot of trouble. well, that's about it. i liked the movie but think the spiker could have made better choices in his girlfriend and career.

The White Shadow: The Complete Second Season

The White Shadow: The Complete Second Season Review

See more picture

Another school year at Carver High and while some things have changed much has remained the same. The early episodes of this season still has Coach Reeves attempting to win the complete trust of his players. However, outside forces, such as an embittered and wronged black student, attempt to sabotage the players-coach relationship. Another excellent episode is when a new player suddenly dies during practice shortly after making the team. These are just a couple of examples of how The White Shadow was ahead of its time when it came to television series' about high school. The young generation may think this show is dated but if you grew up watching this show as I did, you'll appreciate and reminisce. When professional basketball player Ken Reeves sustains a career-ending injury, he accepts a job as basketball coach at a Los Angeles inner-city high school. Now, in his second year at Carver High, he realizes he's become more than just a basketball coach. He's the person his players can turn to when things go wrong at home, or when things get tough out on the street. Clashes still arise highlighting the differences between the world Coach Reeves knows and the tough neighborhoods where his players live, but ultimately the bond between coach and player is strengthened—and the daily hardships they face become a true learning experience for all.

The Complete Shiloh Film Collection

The Complete Shiloh Film Collection Review

See more picture

I loved the Shiloh movies...all three of them. I don't usually watch family movies. I'm more into Sci-fi and drama. We recently brought home a beagle puppy and when I saw these movies about a beagle I thought they might be fun. They were. These are not movies about a super dog, or a dog that acts like a human. They about the responsibilities of owning a dog, the challenges of doing what's right, and being a person of integrity. I brought them with me to a Christmas Family reunion and we watched all three straight through. Everybody loved them. All ages of us. I wish there were more of them. Basil

Basil Review

See more picture

This was a lush period piece based on the Wilkie Collins book. Not a bad actor in it, especially Derek Jacobi, whom I consider one of the greatest Shakespearan actors along side Sir Lawrence Oliver and Kenneth Branaugh. Jared Leto was convincing as the naive, innocent and sheltered aristocratic son of Derek Jacobi with Christian Slater as the friendly stranger who befriends Basil only to set him up. My only criticism of the film would be the editing -- it seemed piece-y to me and didn't transition well between seens. Other than that I found the film most enjoyable and would recommend it to period films, Collins' fans or fans of any of the actors involved in the movie. Big-screen favorites Christian Slater, Jared Leto, and Claire Forlani are the hot stars in this powerful story of passion, betrayal, and revenge! Basil is a sheltered young Englishman willing to risk his fortune and place in society for the friendship of a commoner and love of a strikingly beautiful -- but darkly mysterious -- woman. His newfound happiness is shattered, however, with the devastating discovery that all he holds dear is a cruel deception! With a terrific cast giving truly memorable performances -- you'll be riveted as the intrigue only deepens when Basil faces his family's darkest secrets while coming to terms with his past!
